Gender- based violence, or "violence againstwomen," includes many kinds of harmful physical, emotional, and sexual behaviors against women and girls that are most often carried out by family members, but also at times by strangers.

 

Liberia Crisis Center Opens Shelter In Liberia

 

The first safe haven for women and children victims of abuse in Liberia has officials been opened in Monrovia. During the program, which was held June 9, 2006 at the Urban Chateau Hotel on 10th Street in Sinkor, Mrs. Beverly Goll-Yekeson told the gathering that the opening of the safe house marked the bringing to fruition of her life time dream of putting the plight of abused women and children to the top of the agenda of the Liberian society.

 

 

The President and Founder of the US-based African Crisis Center

for Empowerment (ACCEM), Mrs. Berverly Goll-Yekeson, has attributed rape, sexual exploitation and violence against women to worldwide poverty. Mrs. Yekeson said the protection of women and girls should be paramount in every effort for women's safety. She spoke Tuesday via video recording from Maryland in the United States during the launching of a campaign to "Stop Violence Against Women" at the Len Millar Salvation Army School System in Monrovia.

Ellen Promises To Fight Sexual Exploitation

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has reaffirmed government's commitment to the fight against sexual exploitation and abuse in the country. She said her government was making efforts to stop sexual exploitations among the youths and to raise awareness of its negative impact on development in Liberia. She indicated that addressing sexual exploitations and abuse effectively require collective efforts by focusing on prevention, adding prevention is a crucial first approach in this pattern.

 

 

Gongloe Wants Women-Men Partnership to Fight Rape

Task Force On Gender Based Violence Launched


In order to deal with the issue of sexual and gender based violence (GBV), especially in the township of West Point, a special community oriented task force has been formally launched in the community by Representative Enomifa Ennos of Electoral District #1 in Montserrado County.
